To recap for those who are unfamiliar with the premise of Newman’s masterful alternative history vampire series, Dracula is a real historical figure whose story didn’t end with Stoker’s very inaccurate 1888 biography. Well, if you find yourself between the pages of the latest edition of Kim Newman’s Anno Dracula book, Johnny Alucard: 1976-1976 (Titan Books), then you’re right on target. The director in question is Hollywood’s favorite wine-maker, Francis Ford Coppola. Oh, you know this one? Ok, yes, you’re partially right. Which I’m pretty sure is what I said about Straight on ‘Till Morning too, but Elizabeth Lim is such a fantastic writer, it’s hard not to fall in love with her books. So far my favourite is Reflection, but I think this takes the second top spot. And the next cover has just been revealed – Unbirthday, an Alice in Wonderland tale. I really hope these books keep coming, because I will definitely keep reading. Yep, it’s another Twisted Tales book, so far one of my favourite ever series. He concludes that an evaluation of true freedom must necessarily include the freedom to access social services such as healthcare, sanitation and nutrition, just as much as it must acknowledge economic and political freedoms.Įvaluating the relevance of the current thinking behind development, Sen concludes that the term ‘freedom’ cannot simply be about income. He says people tend to think of freedoms as economic (the freedom to enter into market exchanges) or political (the freedom to vote and be an active citizen), and tries to understand why the definition has been so narrow hitherto. Having come to the conclusion that development is best summed up as the expansion of freedom, Sen examines traditional definitions and understandings of the term. Amartya Sen uses his 1999 work Development as Freedom to evaluate the processes and outcomes of economic development. |
